Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Speaking of which....why did you leave in the middle of the night? Right in the middle of High Symbel, to be more precise.

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS I was wondering if anybody found somethings that seem to have been misplaced when I left in the middle of the night.
1. a black drinking horn 2. a pewter thor hammer that says p borda 2009 on the bottom. on a black cord 3. a thor hammer carved on deer antler on a black cord the hammers were lost sometime during the kids events and the horn was left up in the cannopy area. If anybody has these or knows the where abouts I would be very greatful..... Thanks, Atli

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS ![]() A lot of photos were taken at Lightning Across the Plains. Here are links to some of those photos... Setting-up and an Oathing: http://tinyurl.com/ycyrw3k Day 1 - Friday: http://tinyurl.com/y9auu97 Day 2 - Saturday: http://tinyurl.com/yccmdco I have very few photos from Sunday, and haven't posted them. It was important to us that children were welcome at our event, entertained at our event, and learned about our Folkway at our event. There were children's activities throughout the weekend. This video is from one of the activities...Kids Battlefield Games. I've embedded a YouTube video of the kid battles below. Next year's LATP will be September 24-26, 2010. Please mark it on your calendar, and gather with us here in the Heartland... Mark

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Thanks for posting that, MJ.
Mike, if you head up this way...just call me AND email me (just to cover all the bases) and let me know. You would have our hospitality. You could visit anytime...or stay with one of us anytime. Just give us a little notice. If there's an event, all the better...but its not necessary. We are a hospitable tribe. ![]() Actually, if you let us know you were coming, that would probably prompt an event to welcome you. 816-809-5601 and voidpulp@yahoo.com Mark

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS My kinswoman, Mary Ellen Rowe is a tenured Professor of History at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
Check out her personal UCMO page: http://faculty.ucmo.edu/merowe/index.html She is a Living History expert. The tent she had up is a replica of a 17th Century French Military tent. It was easy to put up compared to my modern dome tent and she stayed completely dry during the thunderstorm, whilst I lay in a rather soggy bedroll. So much for modern conveniences. The bindrune banner (Ethel-Eoh) was handwoven by her on her own loom. She is a remarkable woman and FULL of knowledge of heathenry. I am honored she is my friend. Be well, Mj

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Indeed there was a lot of comraderie there and we look forward to opening up a bit more at LATP 2010.
We'll be heading up to Nebraska to visit Kati's sister in the upcoming year and we're hoping to maybe be able to plan it around a time when JBK might be holding an open gathering. If so we'd like to detour that way and visit with yall again before next LATP.

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Mike, your story gave me goosbumps. Thank you for coming.
\Though a lot of us did not have the time to interact and have the ability to get to know people that we wanted to get to know better I still feel there was a lot of commaradarie there. Maybe next year we will have a little more down time to get to know people. |

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Mike, I can understand being quiet. I also had commented to Glen that I wished there had been more mingling on my part to meet folks. Part was just quiet observation and part was the darn hacking cough I had all weekend. Next year we can all mingle more. We are glad your family showed up for LATP.

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Mike,
We really enjoyed having your family there...and I'm glad you posted about what the event meant for you and your family. You post, and what it says, means a lot to me. We will keep in touch, and I can't wait to see you next year...and here how things have developed for you down in Texas. I agree with Johnny...you guys were the real deal. 10.5 hours in a Ford Focus with kids to come up here...and you were excellent guest, and the times we did talk a bit...I was very glad you were there. It's always a great feeling when your family express an interest in something that is so close to your heart. I hope you have some great conversations with him. Keep us posted on how it goes....

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS Mike...from what I saw of you while you were up here, you Texan Heathens are the real deal too. Only a real Heathen would drive that far to connect with other Heathens that they had never even met.
I look forward to seeing you next year.

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS When my family set out on the 647 mile journey that would take us to LATP, we honestly didn't know what to expect. We've long been silent in the heathen community, watching from the sidelines but ultimately carrying on our faith as a lone family. We didn't truly know anyone going but we overpacked our little Ford Focus and made the drive anyways; and I would be less than truthful if I said there wasn't a little trepidation as we left out of Texas.
About a year or so ago I stumbled across this site. I've kept it bookmarked, checked in on it weekly and even occasionally posted here on the message boards and I've always liked what I've seen. A kindred who uses the tribal model. A kindred that talks about seeking out the similarities in heathen group instead of focusing on the differences (my wife has had to suffer my monthly rant on that topic for years now). A kindred that does instead of says. It all piqued our interest enough we had to make this trip. LATP and all the good, true folk that made their way to this event did not disappoint. It was an experience like we've never before had and on saturday night in High Symbel I can honestly say I've never before felt such spirituality in all my life. As we pulled away from Camp Gaea on Sunday morning I turned to Kati and said, "These mid-western folk are the real deal." She smiled and agreed. Our only regret is that we remained so quiet through the weekend. It wasn't out of a lack of interest, its just that both of us are quiet people. We've been doing this for so long by ourselves, sometimes old habits are hard to break. But now we've tasted true heathen community and we left LATP with a hunger for more of it. That is a gift in and of itself. Today I experienced another side effect of LATP, one that took me a bit by surprise. My parents have always took a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in regards to our religion. They always understood that we weren't christian, but that was always about as far as things went. They knew we were going to LATP, knew somewhat about what the gathering was for and my father even checked in with us daily; as he always does when we are out of state. Today when I spoke with him he started asking questions, and was checking out the photos I posted to facebook. We had a long talk about heathenry and he asked how I came across it. I told him I came across it 12 years ago and the very virtues it teaches were the same things he taught me about being a man when I was growing up. He just chuckled and said, "Good, I'm glad you were paying attention and that it stuck with you." then he asked me for the names of some books he might check out on it. Whenever I'm not working weekends, we usually gather at my parents house on fridays for dinner and family time. Looks like this friday I'll be taking some books with me. LATP affected this family quite a bit. Thanks.

It was Mary Ellen Rowe's tent. Ah! I didn't get a chance to talk to her! She's like a professor of something ... I wanted to pick her brain.

Re: LIGHTNING ACROSS THE PLAINS That was the Hammer Tree Kindred camp, I think that's right. The kindred straight across from my camp.
